PARTS OF
THE FIELD
Learning the parts of the field is essentially the first step in gaining game intelligence in soccer. It’s amazing how many players don’t know all the parts of the field, even at advanced ages. How can this be? It’s simple. No one ever taught them.
Smarter.Soccer has created three different levels of field knowledge based on age.
L.01
Level One
U5-U6
When children first start playing organized games, the field is simplified into basic components. Two goals, usually the portable variety or cones, are placed on either end of a small rectangle. Field markings at this stage are rare, but areas of the field are designated, such as the corners, center spot and the goal area in front of the net when goal kicks are being honored. Players should understand the two main boundaries of play: goal lines and side lines. Different programs start at various ages and children at this age learn at individual rates. Have fun learning the different parts of the field without pressure.
